1. Mount Kenya: 5199 Metres

Mount Kenya is the Tallest Mountain in Kenya. The highest peak is Batian at 5199 metres above the sea level. The other peaks Nelion and Lenana rise to an altitude of 5188 metres and 4985 metres.

Asides from being the Tallest Mountain in Kenya, Mount Kenya is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mountain is of outstanding Universal Value.

When it comes to culture and traditions, Mount Kenya is of great significance to the Kikuyu people. The mountain is regarded as the home of ‘Ngai’ their God.

Mount Kenya is the only Mountain in Kenya covered with glacier.

2. Mount Elgon: 4321 Metres

Mount Elgon is the second Tallest Mountain in Kenya. The extinct volcanic mountain rises to a height of 4,321 metres. Its highest point is called Wagagai and it is in Uganda.

In Kenya, Mount Elgon can be found in Bungoma County.

According to UWA, Mount Elgon was once the highest mountain in Africa. However, millennias of erosion have reduced it to its current height.

Currently, Mount Elgon is home to two tribes, the Bagisu and the Sabiny.

3. Mount Satima: 4,001 Metres

Also known as Mount Lesatima, Mount Satima is the 3rd Largest Mountain in Kenya. It rises to an elevation of 4,001 metres and is the highest peak of the Aberdare Range. Other tall peaks include Elephant Hill, Rurimeria and Table Mountain.

Mount Satima is also one of the most scenic mountains in Kenya. Hiking and summiting this mountain is considered to be one of the most therapeutic activities to do in Kenya.

4. Mount Kinangop: 3,906 Metres

Rising to an elevation of 3,906 metres, Mount Kinangop is the 4th Tallest Mountain in Kenya and the second highest peak of the Southern Aberdare Range (Nyandarua Ranges)

According to the hiking community, Mount Kinangop is one of the most difficult mountains in Kenya to hike. The trail that winds to the peak of the mountain is slippery, not straight and has a high elevation gain.

5. Mount Mtelo: 3,336 Metres

Mount Mtelo is the 5th Tallest Mountain in Kenya. The mountain has an elevation of 3,336 metres (10,944 feet) and can be found in West Pokot County.

Hiking this mountain is considered as a strenous activity as it takes about 2 days to summit the peak. In case you are a mountaineer, Mount Mtelo is a good spot to hike, camp and enjoy birdwatching.

Mount Mtelo is not just a montain to the people of Pokot, it is also a place of worship. During the drought season, Pokots assemble at the slopes of the mountain and pray for rain.

6. Mount Eburu: 2,856 Metres

Mount Eburu is also known as Ol Doinyo Eburu. It is an active volcanic mountain that rises to an elevation of 2,856 Metres. The mountain can be found in Eburu Forest.

8. Mount Longonot: 2,776 Metres

Mount Longonot is among Kenya’s most popular mountains. It rises to an altitude of 2,777 metres above the sea level, this makes it the 8th Highest Mountain in Kenya.

Hiking Mount Longonot is considered to be a moderately strenous but fun activity. The 3.1 kilometres trail up the mountain takes about 4-6 hours to complete.

Upon summiting the peak of Mount Longonot, hikers have an option of hiking down the mountain or going round the rim. This adds some extra 7.2 Kilometres.
